- Spray Paint
This artist does his work in a city environment, I can infer from the street photography and the spray paint, looking almost like graffiti. A lot of his photos are also involving his instillations and his studio. The way he sets up his work is really cool and interesting. I like how in a lot of his paintings, he smears paint and almost gives it a fogging window effect, and uses text through stencils. Through all of the artists I’ve looked through for community connections, I can say that this one is my favorite. I find it relatable to my work, and I just really like it. I’m glad I got to look through all of the pictures and enjoy it. The white walls and the paintings that really stand out against them. I love it.

- Cartoonistic People Paintings
What this artist does is he uses a lot of brightly colored paints and makes pieces that have people who are oddly proportioned and look cartoon-like. He uses lots of interesting designs and shapes as well to incorporate a unique idea. I really like his work, I think it is very different and interesting. He also paints on wood, furnature and other materials. He has had his paintings digitally printed on tshirts, and he also designed his own work through digital media. And he collages a decent amount to make the same type of design but with different textures and layers. The collages he makes are my favorite, because I really liked the mixed media and the way he brings all of the pieces together. I find his work to be very interesting. Also I really like how he personifies a lot of non living things, like in this piece the flower with the face and the worms and skulls and by the using of black and white just really intrigues me.

- Patterns
- Repition
This artist makes abstract work that is basically in series. The series that I like the best is called Somewhere Beyond or Behind. It is abstract black lines that are formed into shapes that outline a piece which reminds me of chains, or something. I think it is really unique and I enjoy it. He also uses transparency to portray designs from outlines or objects. Or he also uses clear thing to work on top of and underneath, creating a very cool looking effect. I feel some of his pieces relate to mine, because they use a lot of repetition of patterns and I try to do that in some of my pieces. Also I usually like to do abstract work, which is generally what this artist does.

- Layers
What this artist does is uses a lot of different materials and layers to create unique designs and elements of her pieces. In one of her series she uses the base of a layer as wood blocks and builds on top of it with ink, paint, wire and some other materials. Each individual piece looks unique and different from one another but it can still be determined that it is by the same author. She uses what she does to create a variety of pieces and I think that they are all really incredible. One that I really like is is called Posting One. I just think it is really simple but it is also very unique and intriguing. I love how this artist uses layers and black and white colors to convey something that is both simple and complex. I haven’t really seen anything like these, that is probably what appeals to me so much about it.

- Contrasting colors
What this artist does in majority of his pieces is he has text written completely covering the entire thing, but he cuts each even line in half and places it someplace else so the words don’t make sense. He uses bright colors in most, and colors that are opposites such as black and white, or anything where the words really stand out. My favorite piece out of what is displayed on his website is called “The Path To Meaning.” It really caught my eye because of how the text is incorporated to make a design and to show elements of text, but it is so jumbled it just looks like nothing. And that’s what I like about it. His pieces seem similar to what I do, because I like to have a lot of illegible text, although I don’t cut it and mix it up, I could. But I don’t think mine would be nearly as good as his. He also uses lots of line patterns to add to what he is doing with his work. I really like everything he’s done.

What Martina Dresler does is make abstractions of every day life things like a city skyline, or the stars, or even dreams. She uses pannels of paint in sections to create design and separate colors. One I really like is called Channel 1. Its supposed to be an interpretation of a dream. I like how all the colors are clearly defined, but somehow blend together. It’s just really beautiful. Another I really like is called Dubai At Night. The different textures that the paint are applied on the paper really stand out to me. All of her paintings I find really interesting and beautiful.

Vincent Hawking creates paintings that all look very different from each other, but they have similarities in a way you can tell it is the same artist. He uses a lot of dull colors like white, grey and dull pastels but it is all very colorful because he then incorporates a small portion that is brighter, darker, bolder than the rest of the painting. There is one painting that I like in particular, this one, because I like how it is arranged compositionally while using the neutral colors to stand out even with the bright blue and green. I really like all of his artwork, because abstraction is my favorite to create and attempt to understand in others.

-Bright solid colors
-Geometric Shapes
What he does is he uses colors and simple geometric shapes to create a beautiful abstract piece. One that he made which I really like, is split up into four black and white window-like panels. In some of his pieces, he uses bright colors as a background to contrast with either white or black shapes or designs in the middle of the piece. What it looks like he uses the most is water colors, and also some ink to get definitive colors. Another piece I like is called Untitled. It has four vertical lines. Grey, black, grey, green. Pale pale green, and the grays seem to fade as it moves down. The black looks like ink. It is really a cool piece. I enjoy his work, because it is simple and beautiful.

-Broken things
Majority of his photographs are of average, every day things in life but they are broken, in his places album. Another part of his photography are of cars, but not just nice cars, but normal cars in cool places. Different angles and colors and reflections off of them. He also takes pictures of people. Normal people. Everyday people. I really like his work because it is relatable and it reminds us how the world is beautiful, even the one we live in.
The part about how his work is relatable is probably my favorite thing about it. There is nothing that is particularly artsy or creative, but his simplicity is what truly makes a statement. I really like everything about what Jordan Winick does.

-Cities
Nancy Nicholson’s majority of paintings are of cities. Life in the city. Average things you see, what you see but don’t particularly notice, and what the mood being in the city sets. A lot of them have a similar sky. The texture of it is blended assortment of colors. Every single sky looks different, just like every single day when you look up. My favorite piece of hers is called “12th Floor“. It uses bright colors in the front of the view from up high, and it fades and begins to blend in with the sky. It’s also from a very unique angle, because you can see the rails of the balcony, as if you are not looking from over it but maybe looking from a window, or standing close to the door. It gives the painting a more personal point of view. The color and texture of most of her paintings make them look like as if they are stained glass, which I suppose is her theme. The similarities and the differences are what makes each piece beautiful.

Ben Volta has a large variety of what his artwork is being used for. For some of his projects, he travels to middle and elementary schools and works on getting children involved and creating art that can be remembered for making a difference. His art is used to help bring the community together and encourage them to keep growing. It helps students realize what they are capable of, and how they can be unique, original and creative on their own without being judged. One piece I really enjoy is the Constellation and the Tectonic Quilt. Both are multiple colors, ideas, thoughts, dreams, anything; being brought together. Making one big beautiful picture, despite the differences within it. The ideas of Ben Volta get students and teachers and anybody else in the community to think, to excel, to grow, and to learn that they can do anything when they are being themselves.

- Mixed media
- Patterns
What I really like about Dolan Giemans work is the patterns he has within his mixed media paintings. There is one in particular that I really like that has a bird in the center and the background is a pattern of red and with a faint white checker but it has a really interesting brush stroke and it is really cool. Another thing he uses alot in his work is pannels, which can also end up being a really neat design within the pannels that can be arranged in a certain way. It’s really awesome. He uses basic everyday things that people need in life and turn them into art. I find it really enjoyable to look at because it makes you recognize the things you have and it makes them seem much more beautiful. His work reminds you that everything in the world can be art, you just have to make yourself see it that way.

- Action drawings
- Style
Tom Marioni does really awesome pieces by action drawings, which is when he does an action repeatily and makes art or a design out of it. One thing he does is have people run by and draw a line, over and over and over again until it begins to pick up a texture and sense of design. It is really cool and creative. His website has videos also of how he does it, or how he gets people to help him create his wonderful pieces. It’s unique and different which is a key factor to being great. I really liked his gallery of drawings, because the repitition made it so cool. My favorite was called Offset Lithographs. It’s black and white, repetitive but with an amazing design, and I just really love it.

-Abstract point of view
-One color majority
-Various lines
-Texture and layering
His artwork stood out to me because of the colors, from a smaller picture they look very simple but once you click on it to make it bigger, you realize there is a lot more to the pieces. I really like the one that looks like an underwater scene, with a fish and what looks like a submarine is chasing it, because I really like the islands at the top. They are more detailed than the rest of it but they still look simple, and almost to be floating. I connect to this because I really like to use various lines and I enjoy abstract art. Some of his are easier to distinguish than others. Then there are pictures of things that look like lamps and cakes and stuff like that and they are simple, by using two colors and not much detail, but they use lines to make it look good, also dripping paint to give it more of a texture. His mixed media are very interesting, and I really like that there is a lot of different textures and layers to his pieces.

-Abstract point of view
-Brush strokes and color
-Theme paintings
His art on his website particularly stood out to me because his pieces had similar themes, such as night and day, and they would look similar, but at the same time they would vary so much and be so different. Most of his art seems very simple, like his watercolors which are mostly just one color or a canvas, but it had quick and designed brush strokes, that made the pieces look like they had a lot more going on then what it appears at first. His “Night” paintings are shades of blue with unique brush strokes and faded thick lines painted horizontal all the way down the canvas. They are very unique and I really like them a lot. I feel like I relate to this because I really enjoy creating abstract art and I like to see it also and try to figure out what it means, since there could be so many interpretations. Leaving the rest up to the viewer is my favorite part, and something I wish to achieve.

- Bright Colors
Jan Dibbets uses the contrast of 2 different scenery photographs and puts them together so they look level, unreal, bright and eye-catching. The arrangements show the similarities and major differences between two places such as a bright green grassy field, and a deep blue ocean. Another thing she does with her photography is show progression, such as waves rippling through a lake. Also her light in darkness is really cool. What she does is a really creative new look on how photography collides with modern art, and allows her to be unique. The scenery contrasts between field and ocean is my favorite because of the way that Dibbets arranges it so that they look so similar and their differences are so bright, but it doesn’t look unnatural, just surreal in a good way.

- Color Contrast
Posenenske uses the contrast of colors to create photographs and then paintings of something simple that could create a design or a pattern. In the first series of her pictures, it shows a tan pipe or vent type of thing and it is against white walls, white staircases, all white to make the tan stand out. In the paintings she also displays, they are all similar and have a repeating pattern of outlines of squares or something and they grow darker as they move closer to the center, so if viewed from the center out it seems as though they are fading away. It is very unique and interesting and enjoyable for the eye to look out and try to follow.

-Repition
-Lines
-Color
Susan Schwalb uses repetition in her pieces, so that it flows almost like waves. There are 2 main colors in most of them, and the lines through it; which are not always precise are a different color than the more solid background. The lines breaking through look like tears in the painting; like something is trying to get out or peek through. The colors could mean different emotions; like there is one that is gray on the outside with red breaking through and it could mean that she is hiding anger or strong, bold color that wants to escape and be recognize instead of being hidden under the emotionless, simple gray. I really like her repetition in her artwork; it gives me a sense of pattern and makes her work recognizable.

Over my summer I went to the art museum in Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri. It was a beautiful view from the outside, so I was even more eager to go inside. It was a free museum so I walked right in and right away there were murals on the walls, and there were several hallways to turn down, and floors to go up and many places to see beautiful art and find adventure. They had sections in several cultures, which my mom was really excited about, since she is very interested in cultural anthropology and art is an important part of every culture. I was interested too.
Another thing in the museum I found really neat was the decorative arts exhibits. It was so cool how artists made furniture out of the most interesting, and random things. The vases were also very beautiful. There were all different types, taking up a whole big section. I was really impressed with the decorative arts, because everything in that section of the museum just looked awesome. I like to go to art museums or do something at the city I am visiting, so I feel like I have something more to remember it by. I really loved St. Louis.

Over Winter Break, I went to the Philadelphia Art Museum with my brother and my grandmom. I’ve never been there before so I was very excited. The building itself looks beautiful, even from a distance, and the view from the top of the steps overlooking the city and the grass and trees looks great. There was one exhibit inside specifically that I liked, and it was abstract paintings, that were just bright colors. They looked really cool and each one was different, but with a similar pattern. My brother was very interested in the section with the swords and the carvings in them. He looked at them for a very long time and was just fascinated. My grandma really liked the classic paintings that they have there all year round. I was more interested by the architecture of the building, because I thought the museum itself would be a little more interesting. I liked it though, I had fun.
It is important to relate to your community because, its where you are from, where you live, and people who live in it like you do great things everyday. Knowing more about your community makes you understand better where you come from. I am glad to go to local art things, because it lets me know that there is art everywhere, even in your hometown. I like to have that feeling. The art museum is special, and people come from all around the world to see it, and I can just see it in my own home-city.

When I was in Minnesota, I went to check out the University because the Twin Cities were so nice that I found interest in it. The University had a small arts school, with a small display, but my mom and I went to go see it. The stuff there was really cool. There was this one piece I liked in particular. It was a big picture of a lot of different things in nature, like trees and the sun and stars and flowers and people and other animals, and they were all different colors, but not colors they would normall be, the sky was purple, people were green and yellow, and it all connected. Like the one persons leg turned into a tree that connected to a flower, and when everything was together it looked really beautiful.
I think that maybe that piece is more than just the connection in the art, but may reflect how the person feels about life and nature, and their beliefs and maybe even religion, about how everything comes together. There were some other interesting pieces there, most were small sculptures, and other paintings of scenery and people and other things. I think that it is important wherever I go to find art somewhere, even though I don’t really have to look for it or even go to an art display, but it is something else to remember when you go somewhere. From what I saw in the city there was not that much sculptures and paintings on buildings like in Philly, but it was still interesting to see how a different city reflects its art.

I went to the art festival in Chestnut Hill the other weekend, and it was great to see all of the artwork from local people in Philadelphia. There were many tents set up all down main street and they all had all sorts of different things, like unique crafts and giant paintings. I went with Patrick West and we were both pretty interested in everything, and stopped to look all over at every station to get as much as we can out of it. One thing that really fascinated us was the free trade store called Ten Thousand Villages.
We spent about an hour inside Ten Thousand Villages, because everything in there was so cool and interesting and different. There was a lot of really cool jewlery that was all hand made from people in third world contries who are getting paid the right fair amount for what they made. They also had cool decorations soaps and backpacks and instruments and pretty much everything. About 2 weeksa go Patricks Mom took us both there again and there were alot of different things, because its all hand made its always changing. Going to the art festival helped me connect to art within our community and all over the world.

Over my summer I went to St. Louis, Missourri for a national tennis tournament, which was held at a national park right outside of the city. The park was beautiful, it had many museams and art sculptures everywhere. In between matches, my mom and I would go and walk around the park, and observe all of the interesting artwork. I did not get a chance to go through any of the museams, but the outside of them was good enough. There was this one sculpture that particularly stood out to me, and that was a metal tree.
There was a group of real trees and then there was a metal tree right in the middle of them. It was shiny and silver and just their height, but it was bare, where as all the others had leaves. It seemed really interesting to me and I feel that the location was not a coincidence, it was meant to be with other trees so it stands out. I wonder what it means.
Also my friends mom has a very nice camera, and she was walking around and there was this one scenery with a water fountain and then a hill and at the top of the hill was a huge museam that was very pretty, and there was a professional photographer there who had the fountain turned off just for him to take a picture where the building reflects in the water, and he was sitting on his car taking it when my friends mom took a picture of the scenery, and in the corner was him taking the picture, but the way it worked he was just a black outline, and it was the coolest picture i have ever seen.
